He is instantly attracted to the heroine, thinks she is a spoiled little rich girl, and then revises his opinion as he gets to know her. The only conflict in this story is the heroine initially thinking she has to be nice to the hero for the sake of her father's business dealings. Otherwise her evil father will throw her grandma with dementia out in the streets. Once she goes on a date with the hero, the heroine feels guilty because she really likes the hero for himself and doesn't think he'd understand that her motives weren't pure to begin with, but are now. Also, she is tied down to her grandmother and it wouldn't be right for her to date? I dunno. Poor dear was addled from all of that lust.
There are pages and pages of internal monologues, so be warned. Nov 18, Becky rated it really liked it Shelves: dishonest-heroine , family-causes-trouble , hero-kind-decent , virginity-unclear. In so many ways, a 3 star read for me. Willaful said it best, referring to it as "wangsty". I had to laugh at that, because in 20 different places I said to myself: "This is the most repetitive mea culpa I've ever read. I lied now I'm a terrible person for lying about why I first went In so many ways, a 3 star read for me.
I lied now I'm a terrible person for lying about why I first went to dinner during a week of awesome consensual sex where I totally rocked his world. I lied and poisoned everything! I'm so bad, woe is me. Really, I'm terrible, can never forgive myself. Bad me. You're cleaning poop and you are a saint. So why the heck did I give it four stars?

I don't know, I've been desperate for an HP where a hero actually falls in love with a woman. He's not looking to use her for sex or pay her to pretend or dump her for not being Greek or whatever or reject her baby or steal her baby or blackmail her to be his wife, mistress or interior designer really, I think I read one like that. He actually falls for her and works his butt off to woo her.
How he is as excited about what he learns about her as a person as he is about her body. And he didn't even think about other women or whether she was a virgin, and a normal next step of his growing feelings was to seek a future with her. So yeah, that part was fabulous. It's only after the big reveal that it all falls to melodramatic crap. The book was basically over for me when she went home. I'd have been pretty happy with the truth coming out right then including why she went home. Dragging it out to this big and really stupid amends she makes and her homeless status and working with Alzheimer's patients as penance had this book jump off a cliff.
So I decided to judge it on what I liked and also decided the author just didn't know where to go with such a decent guy. May 01, RLA rated it liked it. The blurb of this book makes it sound remarkably similar to James's book 'Purchased for Revenge'. And while it is a little similar in terms of style, the story is different. I'll be honest and say that at times I found this frustrating to read. The angst in this story is through the roof, and there is so much inner monologuing.
It got really annoying after a while. The word here is Drama! What I did like about this book though is the simplicity of the love that grows between the hero and heroine. The hero in this book is brilliant - he falls for the heroine hard and isn't afraid to say so. Has a few problems, but this is an absorbing read. Don't be put off by the blurb! The heroine is pimped out by her father to the hero. Her father has maliciously blackmailed her into seeing the hero and playing "nice" with him. All because her grandmother was terribly sick and needed a hip replacement. When the hero and heroine make love, then she flees because her grandmother is on her deathbed, the hero is angry. He thinks that the heroine used him and it's true, in some cases she did, in others she loved him deeply.

Then the hero leaves her and she is heartbroken. When the hero comes back again and finally knows the truth, he intends to make the heroine his I got ticked off at this book. I felt terribly sorry for the heroine, as she was just a pawn in this sick chess game. Her father uses her ruthlessly and you can tell he doesn't give a crap about her or anyone else for that matter, unless it's himself.
The hero says he's in love with her, yet won't let her explain her guilt. The poor heroine is being pushed in so many directions it made me utterly frustrated! I thought this was going to be a good read, boy was I wrong! I teared up twice, and not for any happy reasons.

I forced myself to finish this. What I think of the heroine's father isn't fit to be aired. My thoughts on that harpy of his aren't either. The only remotely decent part of this book is the ending. If you want to buy this, read it in the store before you do buy it.
I don't recommend this. Don't waste your money. Worst book I've read this year. Dec 22, Bubblegum rated it liked it Shelves: blackmail , wealthy-hero , debt-repay , trope-lies-omission-deception , misunderstandings , harlequin , secrets-revealed , heartbreak , betrayal. I loved how they overcame the main problem in this book. How the heroine was so ready to be forgiven and felt she didnt deserve forgiveness, but wanted to make it better for the hero, and ease his pain.
And the hero was forgiving, and understanding of the heroines situation. The plot was interesting, took a while to get into but it was worth it because i loved the last half of the book.
Therefore i rate this book with 3. Apr 25, Gege86 rated it it was ok.

This novel was so very well written, but…… it was soooooooooo slow and I didn't enjoy it one bit at all. And I'm ashamed to admit this, but I skipped few lines. My first time ever doing that. Most importantly ,I remembered now why I don't read Julia James novels. Feb 14, Sandra R rated it really liked it.

I actually enjoyed all the 'head stuff' as I was in the mood for something a little more dramatic than usual. Books all can't be light and fluffy and full of sparkling conversation - even Mills and Boon. Nov 15, Ana rated it it was amazing. Jul 15, Naomi rated it it was ok. The story was so dedicated about the miserable life of Flavia. I've got so bored even before I've reach to the half way. I really didn't like this story May 17, Phylisha Stone rated it liked it.
